Exploring the world
In conjunction with this event, there were many other activities for tourists to enjoy, such as beach parties, kite flying displays, photography competitions, sand sculpture art shows, Hainan tropical fruit-eating competition and various cultural performances.
Here you can see Max from Russia crafting his sculpture of Marilyn Monroe, carefully capturing the mysterious charm that has fascinated generations of Hollywood fans.

Walter, shown here with lovely Eva, has done a great job with this Brazilian horned frog (but we hope it isn't really that big).

Paul and Remy are working on their giant elephant, the very picture of serenity.
Nearby a gorilla sits comfortably next to an Egyptian Pharaoh.

The sand artists have done a great job and are sure to enthrall the crowds with their window on the world beyond Sanya.

Helena Bangert
Helena Bangert has worked with many different materials and media over the years. She did her first public sand sculpture in 2001 and, since then, has worked on many sand-carving projects and festivals all over the world.
She began crafting ice sculptures in 2004
.
During November/December 2005, Helena was in Sanya to work on the Guinness Book of Records attempt at making the Largest Sand Sculpture Exhibition in the world. Here she is shown working together with Martin on their latest creation.
Paul Hoggard and Remy Geerts
Here are some thoughts from Paul and Remy.
You can see more of their work at www.sandartist.com
Sand sculptures are made using only sand and water.
They can be of almost any shape or size:
a castle,
a human, an animal, a plant or, indeed, a fantasy form.
Ephemeral in its nature, sand art is seen on beaches all over the world.
Sand sculptures are made by using only natural materials.
They are eco-friendly and do not harm our environment.
With sand as a medium you can create large sculptures in a relatively short time.
It is a natural human instinct to play with sand and this is the best way to learn three dimensional sculpting,
using a free and easy medium that everyone can access, young and old.
With good sand and a few techniques almost anything is possible, the only restriction is gravity.
To see a sand sculpture is very special.
A day earlier or a day later the sculpture might not be there.
Sand sculpture is for the here and now. It is transient and temporary, vivid and alive.
It is a very relaxing experience to create something out of sand and water, on the beach.
Spend time shaping and carving the sand: slowly your sculpture appears and, for a moment, seems to come alive.
Sand sculptors create just half the experience; the other half is created by you, the viewer.
Amazin' Walter
December 16: Happy Birthday!
See some snaps taken at Walter's birthday party at the bottom of the page.
Amazin? Walter is an international master of sand sculpture, with a huge number of credits to his name, including a 1st place in the American championships and a 3rd place in the World championships.
Welcome to Sanya, Walter! Here he has made us a Mexican Olmec head, dating back almost 3,000 years...
We dug around in the archives (his) and found out why he won the US championships.
Here is his entry:
Amazin? Walter is a specialist? he loves arches (we don't know why).
Have you ever tried to make arches on the beach?
It's not easy (maybe he has a trick or two up his sleeve). Take a look:
Yes, but what about sand castles?
The beach is for making sand castles, right?
Well, Amazin Walter can do those too!
Would you like to find out what else Amazin' Walter is up to? You're in for a surprise:
